Children: Any person with reasonable cause to believe a child has been harmed by abuse or neglect must report immediately. Child trafficking is included in the abuse definition. Defined professionals with reasonable cause to believe a child has been or may be abused or neglected must report within 24 hours of first having that reasonable cause and cannot delegate the report. Do not wait for proof or a supervisor’s approval.
Protected adults: Immediate reporting is also required when a person has cause to believe someone 65 or older, or a person covered by the statutory disability definition, is being abused, neglected, or exploited. The definition includes adults whose disability substantially impairs their ability to care for or protect themselves. Facilities and providers may have a different reporting agency.
Privacy: DFPS requires your name and phone number for child-abuse reports. Confidentiality is not anonymity. For other adult situations, reporting duties depend on the facts, your role, and applicable law.
Do not investigate or confront anyone. For optional support, respect the person’s choices. Reporting duties vary by state and situation; a required report to the proper authority does not depend on permission.
